By making changes to our website that bring the data and key messages front and center, we hope to make our research accessible to all. Even more important, we hope to get our findings into the hands of decision-makers who can use them to create policies and programs that improve their populations’ health.
Why did we redesign?
Our values and principles have evolved alongside the world around us. Over the last two years, we have made a concerted effort to redesign our website and content to better answer our audiences' questions. The new look and feel of our site are aimed at both representing our new values and principles, and serving our users’ needs.
We conducted user research to identify common challenges on our site and found many opportunities for improvement. We also tested potential solutions to help inform the new features that we’ve incorporated.
Our new site is also Web Content Accessibility Guideline (WCAG) compliant, supporting current accessibility standards for users with disabilities.
Besides our new look and feel, we’re excited to unveil some new features that will make your search for health data faster than ever.
What changed?
Homepage
Our new homepage brings the data forward, showing key statistics from our featured research stories. There is also much more to explore on our new homepage, including blog posts, recent interactive data visuals, and our most popular pages and tools.
Search page
We’ve improved our search results to make the most relevant content appear first on the page. We also added filters for topics and locations, so you can easily see all the available information we have on your area of interest.
If you’d like to narrow your search even more, we have two additional tabs: Research and News. On the Research tab, you’ll find peer-reviewed publications, reports, interactive data visuals, and other materials that will let you deep-dive into our research. On the News tab, we included articles like blog posts and news releases, which help you understand our findings and their policy impact.
Health topic pages
In addition to the filterable search page, we’ve created custom landing pages for some health topics. You’ll be able to find quick facts and links to featured publications for topics like COVID-19, air pollution, and health financing. Key statistics are highlighted at the top of the page, followed by answers to common questions and additional resources.
For each topic, we provide a research library of our publications, interactive data visuals, and more, so you can skim through all our latest work on that topic.
Menus and navigation
We’re introducing some new navigational features designed to help you find your way more easily between pages. Instead of opening each page in our menu to find what other pages are housed within it, you can now see our whole site hierarchy, right from the beginning. You can quickly skip to your page of interest without extra searching.
You’ll also have a way to get back to pages you previously visited through “breadcrumb” links, which show the pathway from top-level section pages to whichever page you’re currently on.
Logo
Our core values include having a global mindset, and our new color palette reflects that. Drawing inspiration from the diversity of our staff, collaborators, and international partners, we expanded beyond the signature “IHME green.”
The primary color on our website is now a shade of blue, chosen for better accessibility and versatility. Both blue and green are also associated with wellness and health worldwide. We’ve kept a nod to our heritage, retaining green as an important supporting color in our new palette.
Our new logo incorporates the diverse range of new colors you’ll soon see, which complement all the colors used across our website and other digital platforms.
What do you think?
We sincerely hope these updates improve your experience of our website, and we look forward to enhancing it even more in the future.
